A Jew is excommunicated in the Portuguese Synagogue for questioning the Holy Scriptures. A child is watching. Little Bento de Espinosa is considered the greatest prodigy of the Portuguese community in Amsterdam, but the episode plants the seed of doubt in him: What if the Bible really is wrong?
This suspicion will launch Bento on the greatest intellectual quest ever. Who really wrote the sacred texts? What is the truth about God? What is nature in the end?
But this is a forbidden quest and soon the young Portuguese Jew discovers that he will have to pay a terrible price for his questions. Jewish rabbis and Christian preachers persecute him and accuse him of the worst crimes:
